Mariah Wood
Mariah Wood (1817-1910), daughter of Hannah Wood, mother of eight Evans children in Earlysville, Virginia
Welcome!
We're so pleased you dropped in to visit our site. The Evans and Barnett/Girty families have deep roots in the Appalachian region of the United States. They include numerous early ancestors who suffered under the abomination of slavery, whose descendants later achieved freedom and flourished as educators, entrepreneurs, farmers, small business owners, scientists, and more. They are emblematic of many African American families from the region who grew out of oppression and achieved success in their own lives and positively influenced the lives of others.
This family tree is a project of African American Appalachian Legacy, a nonprofit organization focused on education, restoration, and preservation of the history of African Americans in Appalachia.
We've worked for years on this family and its connections to our ancestors. If you have something to add, please let us know. The more we can share with others the more we receive in return. [more to be added here about how to obtain an account and contribute to the tree]
Ianthia Girty
Ianthia McDonia Girty (1873-1958) married Edward Warren Barnett, joining the two families.
